Vision

Return the Seixe watershed to the area of high biodiversity it once was as stipulated by the regulations of the Natura 2000 Network and by the Portuguese legislation that regulates protected areas.

Long term goal

Develop an integrated management plan involving the area’s various stakeholders in order to guarantee sustainable development and apply the principles and practices of administration of the territory that can achieve the desired restoration (see: Principles and Practices).

General objetives

1. Define and implement “good management practices” in relation to forestry in order to ensure the preservation of biodiversity and the restoration of ecosystems;
2. Define a “green infrastructure” whereby the territory of the TerraSeixe Project is integrated into a wider network of ecological corridors, understanding the landscape from a multifunctional perspective;
3. Create a climate refuge that can become an experimental and possibly pioneering zone for adapting to and mitigating climate change’s impacts.  Until the end of Europe’s last glaciation 13,000 years ago the Seixe basin was a refuge against the cold.  It may now serve as a temporary refuge against the heat.
4. Create an Environmental Centre with an international scope that aims to support environmental education, ecotourism, research and scientific tourism, taking into account sustainable local and rural development.
